Pastors' Picnic for the Southwest District of the United Methodist Church

Earlier this afternoon, Mort and I traveled to Fayette First United Methodist Church in Fayette, Alabama, and performed thirty minutes of gospel platform magic at the Pastors' Picnic for the Southwest District of the United Methodist Church.

Cooking For Christ did an excellent job catering the event, and many favorable comments were made regarding the picnic fare of hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the trimmings. While everyone else was eating, Mort and I were busily preparing for the magic show.

After the majority of the food had disappeared, Kip Laxson, the new District Superintendent of the Southwest District, opened the program. Achievements of pastors and their churches were recognized. Mort, who recently earned his certification as a local pastor, was presented with his license.

In June 2007, Mort was appointed as supply pastor of Woodstock United Methodist Church, in Woodstock, Alabama, and West Scottsville United Methodist Church in West Scottsville, Alabama. This past June, he kept these same appointments. However, instead of being a supply pastor, he is now a local pastor.

After all the business was out of the way, Kip introduced Mort and me. Mort opened with his manipulation of the Chinese Linking Rings. I have seen many magicians perform the rings, and Mort, in my opinion, is one of the best.

Toward the end of the show, Kip was called on stage to participate in a very funny routine in which the contents of a cracked egg threatened to ruin his neatly-groomed hair. He, however, was a good sport, and all ended well.

After our performance, Mort; Scarlett, our chicken; Lucky, our rabbit; and I allowed for some mix and mingle time with audience members. We enjoyed having the opportunity to become better acquainted with many of our fellow pastoral families of the Southwest District.

After a quick dinner at Jack's in Fayette, we headed for home with many fond memories of a pleasant afternoon with our United Methodist brothers and sisters.
